RPWL: TALES FROM OUTER SPACE

RPWL return with their first original studio album since 2014’s Wanted, with songs seemingly inspired by science fiction in Tales From Outer Space. These are not corny tales of sci-fi pulp fiction but vehicles for the band to shine a light on all too earthly issues with their trademark highly polished melodic rock. In general, the music of RPWL can best be assigned to art and progressive rock, but it is always song oriented. And the soft voice of Yogi Lang holds everything together. While the last two albums Wanted and Beyond Man In Time were concept albums, this time there isn’t a coherent story - but science fiction is the common denominator. This album is not a concept album in the true sense. But there are seven short stories about science fiction. So it is more an album with a theme. The space associations from the album title plays out in a few different manners here, and the use of cosmic sounding keyboard effects is a part of this. Not that this is anything new to the band, but perhaps given a slight heavier emphasis here and there this time around. Tales From Outer Space is one of the best studio albums that RPWL has made so far. An album full of beautiful melodies and extraordinary guitar work and great vocal performances.
